American Sign Language Website

Context

The ASL website serves to bridge the gap in understanding between hearing and Deaf communities. As finalists in the WISE Quality of Life Innovations competition, my partner Eagle Huang and I recognized the lack of awareness surrounding American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf culture, particularly in education. Motivated by this challenge, we designed and implemented a proposal that included a survey of over 250 people, outreach to experts and organizations, and a comprehensive 30-page research paper. This work highlighted the importance of ASL education in high schools and led to the creation of the website, which aims to promote inclusivity and spread awareness of Deaf culture, fostering a greater understanding and respect for ASL within diverse communities.

Content

For this project, we worked to create the ASL website provides an introduction to American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf culture, aiming to raise awareness and promote inclusivity. It includes educational resources on ASL history, common signs, and linguistic structure, along with insights from industry experts, educators, and nonprofit organizations. The site also highlights the importance of ASL education in schools and presents key findings from a survey of over 250 people, advocating for broader accessibility and understanding of the Deaf community
